Exploring new landscapes

Fluorescent proteins designed from scratch
In the summer of 1961, Osamu Shimomura drove across the country in a cramped station wagon to scoop jellyfish from the docks of Friday Harbor. He wanted to discover what made them glow. It took Shimomura and other biochemists more 30 years to find a full answer. By then, recombinant DNA technology allowed researchers to …

Lab ski trip: Stevens Pass
Spring has sprung in Seattle, and blue skies mean mountain ski trips for the lab. To kick of 2018, lab members Tarik, Fatima, Scott, TJ, Brian C, Gabe B, David B, and friends spent a Sunday at beautiful Stevens Pass

Hiking the Alpine Lakes of the Central Cascades

Adventure in the North Cascades
Some intrepid lab members – David included – recently scaled the North Cascades just two hours outside of Seattle. Fortunately postdoc Alexis Courbet brought his camera gear along, capturing these beautiful scenes.

After months of grey Seattle skies, the lab leapt at a chance to synthesize some vitamin D in Paradise (an actual place at the base of Mount Rainier). Some snowshoed, some skied, and others showed up in the afternoon for a delicious lab BBQ. Couldn’t ask for a more beautiful day!

Halloween 2016 – Rise of the Davids

There was also a menagerie of animals running amok, a beaten-up pinata, and an absolutely TERRIFYING scarecrow.

Community Involvement: Expanding Your Horizons Conference
Over the course of two weekends, one in March and the other in April, volunteers from the lab presented Foldit workshops at the Expanding Your Horizons conferences. They are aimed at girls in Jr and High School and focus on STEM topics. Our workshop was one of over 50+ that were available to chose from, …
